Celebrating World Autism Day '21

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

On World Autism Day 2021 which was observed on 2nd April 2021, ACRSS pushed for acceptance and not mere awareness about autism and how neurotypical people (who are not neurodiverse) can be better allies.

Our first post was about what are the sets of do's and don'ts that neurotypical people should keep in mind around neurodiverse people.

We need to educate ourselves about certain do's and don'ts to keep in mind around Autistic people.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that results in: Social interaction difficulties; communication challenges and a tendency to engage in repetitive behaviours. They often find it difficult to maintain eye contact. If we learn about these behaviours properly and do not take them personally, our well informed actions can make them feel comfortable and loved.

Let us be kinder and try to eliminate the anxiety and stress our actions might cause to individuals with autism. Maintaining a healthy balance between their special needs and normalizing the atmosphere will go a long way.

Every autistic person is different, but changes in routine, sensory differences, anxiety and difficulties in communication are common triggers for all of them. Common signs of meltdowns include hand flapping, head hitting, hyperventilating, pacing, kicking and completely withdrawing into themselves.

Under these circumstances, one must utilize the mentioned resources to calm him/her down and comfort them. With this last post on Autism Awareness Day, we wish to promote the spirit of understanding, accepting and loving autistic people, just like any human being deserving of it.
