THE SUB-DISCIPLINES OF SOCIAL SCIENCE



Greeting AILians! We bring to you an introduction of the sub-disciplines of Social Sciences, the areas of research ACRSS is primarily concerned with. These are as follows:

1. Psychology - Represented by the Greek capital letter Psi (in ancient times seen as the Devil's Triton, since Mental Health issues were considered diabolical work of the Devil), psychology is the study of the mind and behavior, conscious and unconscious phenomena, and feelings and thought.


2. Law - Represented by the Balance Scales, law is a set of rules and regulations that are enforced by a particular country or community through social or governmental institutions to establish standards, maintain order, resolve disputes and protect liberties and rights.


3. History - Often represented by a Quill and Old Paper, history is the study of the past. It is an umbrella term comprising past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organisation, presentation and interpretation of these affairs.


4. Philosophy - Socrates, a Greek Philosopher from Athens is credited as the founder of Western Philosophy. Literal meaning being "Love for Wisdom", philosophy is the study of the most basic and profound matters of human existence such as knowledge, reality and existence.


5. Sociology - As evident through the insignia, sociology is a social science that focuses on society, human social behavior, patterns of social relationships, social interaction and aspects of culture associated with daily life.


6. Religious Studies - This field is devoted to research into religious beliefs, behaviors and institutions. Different subjects include, Rituals and Ceremony, Art History, Gender and Religion, Sacred Scriptures and Theology and Philosophy.


7. Linguistics - Being the scientific study of language, it encompasses the analysis of every aspect of language (phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, etc.).


8. Economics - It is the study of how people interact with value; in particular, the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.


9. Political Science - This discipline deals with systems of governance and power, political activities, behavior and associated laws and constitution.
